With the housing market in disarray, you have the creme de la creme of consignment furnishings to choose from right now. I combed through a furniture consignment store last week while hunting for a client.  I spotted a pair of fabulous tufted armless chairs ($75 each) & a gorgeous French Provincial 4 poster king bed frame ($300).

I’d purchase some luxe fabric for the chairs & whisk them up to my workroom to be reupholstered.  The bed I’d leave as is if you wanted the Restoration Hardware look or I’d paint it.  The bed frame was absolutely stunning!

Here are a few pointers when shopping consignment stores for furnishings…

Think about the area in which the store is located.  In Scottsdale, you typically have the higher end custom furnishings being consigned.  Central Phoenix, you have more of the vintage furnishings.

Look past the current state of aesthetics.  You want a piece with good bones. Fabric & paint can always transform & update a piece.

Finally, negotiate.  When shopping consignment, you tend to have much more wiggle room when dealing with price.  That French Provincial headboard…it was a much higher price, but because it was close to being out of contract, they were willing to let it go for a steep discount.

I love consignment shopping. I stumbled upon a consignment store a couple of weekends ago and purchased a fabulous Gumps zebra tea tray that I’m turning into a pop-up bar. I’ve wanted a bar cart – but when I saw this – it was perfect. 🙂
